co-op
Want to gain real experience in your career field while also receiving academic credit?

Cooperative Education (co-op) is designed for you to participate in work experiences related to your major and/or your area of professional interest for academic credit. You can participate in a structured program offered by host organizations, or can work with an employer to design and develop one that meets both of your needs.

In addition to great work experience, are you ready for an 11-week job interview?  Many students are offered full-time employment as a result of their co-op.  It is also possible for you, in your last term at JWU, to apply for and accept a professional position and to use that position for co-op if the host company agrees.

some select co-op sites  Jane Magazine, CVS/pharmacy,  Double Helix, Atrion Networking, Merrill Lynch, Escada, Island Def Jam Records, Philadelphia Soul, ESPN, Bank of America, Biltmore Estate, Champion Exposition Services, Emeril’s Restaurant, Sun River Resort, Per Se, Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, and the Heinz Innovation Center to name a few. For a full list, visit Career Development.

Students should always consult their degree progress and review GPA requirements to determine eligibility.

externship
While very similar to the co-op program, in terms of process, externship does have some separate distinctions. It is a mandatory program that is built into some majors. Most externship programs allow students to work at sites pre-designated by the university to meet specific learning/skill objectives and may also take place at university-owned sites. The program allows you to earn academic credit towards your degree and the options are typically un-paid. You need to have a GPA of at least 2.0 to participate.

If your major requires you to complete an externship, review the co-op application process and contact the Career Development Office at 401-598-1070 to schedule an appointment.

Students should always consult their degree progress and review GPA requirements to determine eligibility.

co-op abroad
Students have the opportunity to participate in co-op abroad if their GPA
is 3.25 or higher. It is a very selective program open to all majors and
concentrations (except Accounting). The same rules that apply to a domestic co-op apply with a few more since you will be working out of the country. If you are interested in co-op abroad, discuss this option with your coordinator who can help you make the right decision for you.
