JWU Honors Seniors At End Of Year Banquet

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University honored 44 senior student-athletes at the annual end of the year banquet, held at the Johnson & Wales Inn on Monday evening.
 
Women’s volleyball standout Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) and senior hockey star Matt McGilvray (Rochester, N.H.) were selected as the Ron Bachman Award recipients.  The award is annually presented to the Wildcat senior athlete who best exemplifies the core values of leadership, sportsmanship, and academics at Johnson & Wales University.  Also, women’s basketball player Ann Dwyer (Yardley, Pa.) was named the first recipient of the Tom Carmody Award.  The award is given to the JWU student-athlete that best exemplifies loyalty, effort and enthusiasm for the department.

McGilvray, the ECAC Northeast Player of the Year and a U.S. College Hockey On-line All-American, led the team and the conference in scoring with 28 goals and 20 assists for 48 points.  That total ranked him fifth nationally in points per game at 1.9.  He leaves as the school’s second all-time leading NCAA scorer with 72 goals and 65 assists for 137 points in 102 career games played.  A standout in the classroom, he was an ECAC Academic All-Star for four seasons.

Vaccari, an All-GNAC and All-New England selection notched a team-best 10.4 set assists and added 2.5 digs and 0.2 blocks per game.  She leaves as the school’s all time assist leader with 5,265.  Her 9.66 set assists per game also rank her first in school history.  She is also the school’s all-time leader with 406 service aces and ranks third with 1,333 career digs.  A Food Service Management major, she has appeared on the Dean’s List eight times.

Dwyer was an integral member of the JWU athletic community during her career.  In addition to her responsibilities with the women’s basketball team, she was a member of the equipment room staff and helped run several major events throughout the year.  She was an integral part of this year’s Midnight Madness which helped the Athletics Department win the University’s Campus Program of the Year award.

JWU’s Brad Jackson Named All-New England

Providence, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University senior shortstop Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) has been named as a third team All-New England selection by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association.
 
Jackson hit.380 with 43 runs and 36 RBI on the year and ranked in the top five in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference in nearly every offensive category.  He was first in hits (60), first in doubles (18), first in total bases (99), tied for first in home runs (7), second in runs scored (43) and fourth in RBI (36).  During the year he had 19 multiple hit games and had a .627 slugging percentage and a .424 on-base percentage.
 
Johnson & Wales finished the 2008 campaign with a 24-18 record and an appearance in the GNAC Final Four.

Audra Vaccari Named JWU’s RIAIAW Female Athlete of the Year

Providence, R.I. -- Senior Audra Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) was named as Johnson & Wales’ selection as the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Female Athlete of the Year.  The awards ceremony was hosted by Providence College and honored the top female student-athletes from Rhode Island.

One of the most decorated student athletes in Johnson & Wales history, Audra Vaccari was tabbed as an All-New England selection and also earned All-GNAC honors for the fourth time during her career.  In 2007, she notched a team-best 10.4 set assists and added 2.5 digs and 0.2 blocks per game.  The outstanding setter leaves as the school’s all time assist leader with 5,265 while her 9.66 set assists per game also rank her first in school history.  She is also the school’s all-time leader with 406 service aces and ranks third with 1,333 career digs.  She holds the school record for games and matches played during her career and she is only the second player in GNAC history to earn All-New England honors.  A Food Service Management major, she has posted a 3.19 cumulative G.P.A. during her four years while appearing on the Dean’s List eight times.

Johnson & Wales finished the 2007 season with a 27-12 record and a berth in the ECAC Division Championships.

Former JWU Standout John Curley Signs With Frenso Falcons

Fresno, Calif. Former Johnson & Wales University hockey standout John Curley (Philadelphia, Pa.) has been signed by The Fresno Falcons of the ECHL.
 
Curley, a 2006 graduate and captain of Johnson & Wales squad, joins an elite group of former Wildcat student-athletes who have signed professional contracts. During his collegiate career he appeared in 99 games and helped the Wildcats appear in three straight ECAC Northeast tournaments.  Curley is the first JWU hockey player to sign a professional contract since Nick Grove signed with the Pee Dee Cyclones of the Southern Professional Hockey League in 2006.
 
Curley made his debut with the Falcons on Sunday against the Utah Grizzlies.  Fresno won the game 4-3 in an overtime shootout.
 
Earlier this year, Curley played for the Valley Forge Freedom of the Mid-Atlantic Hockey League.  Fresno is currently 31-15-4-4 and in second place in the Pacific Division of the National Conference of the ECHL.

JWU Cross Country Competes At GNAC Championship

Standish, Maine -- The Johnson & Wales University men’s and women’s cross country squads competed at the 2007 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship at Saint Joseph’s of Maine on Saturday afternoon.  The women’s team notched a third place finish while the men’s team was in fourth place on the afternoon.

On the women’s side, sophomore Danielle Sargent (Danvers, Mass.) was in second place with a time of 20:43, earning her All-GNAC accolades while senior Sandra Koehler (Dearborn, Mich.) finished in 11th place with a time of 22:33.  The Wildcats had four runners place in the top-15 at the event.  

Leading the way for the JWU men’s cross country team was freshman James Vance (Newton, Mass.) who was named the GNAC Rookie of the Year and earned All-Conference accolades after notching a second place finish with a time of 28:42 while sophomore Matthew Geisler (Pelham, N.H.) was also an All-GNAC selection, finishing in 9th place with a time of 29:50.  

Both the Wildcats men’s and women’s cross country squads will return to action on Saturday, November 3rd when they travel to Williamstown, Mass., for the ECAC Championship, starting at 11:00 a.m.

JWU Cross Country Competes At Ray Dwyer Invitational

Warwick, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s and women’s cross country squads competed at the Ray Dwyer Invitational at Goddard Park on Saturday afternoon. The men’s team finished in fourth place with 86 points while the women’s team finished with 80 points, good for a third place finish.

Leading the way for the JWU men was freshman James Vance (Newton, Mass.) who finished the 8K course in a time of 31:49 for ninth place while sophomore Nich Oehlberg (Princeton, N.J.) finished in 15th place with a time of 33:08. On the women’s side, JWU was paced by junior Danielle Sargent (Danvers, Mass.) who finished fifth with a time of 20:17 while senior Sandra Koehler (Dearborn, Mich.) clocked a time of 22:07 for a 14th place finish.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday, Sept 29, at the Tri-State Invitational, hosted by CCRI. The men’s race will begin at 9am with the women’s race starting
at 10am.

Soccer Match Postponed
September 11, 2007

The Johnson & Wales Soccer doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday, September 11, 2007 has been postponed due to rain. The women’s game vs. Salem State will be made up on Monday, September 24th at 4pm. The men’s game vs. Framingham State will be rescheduled for a date later in the season and will be announced shortly.

The Wildcats men’s soccer squad will return to action on Thursday, September 13th when they host Rhode Island College at Pierce Stadium at 4pm. The women’s soccer team will return to action on Saturday, September 15 when they host GNAC at 1pm.
