Providence Campus to Establish the PROVIDENCE, R.I. — March 27, 2007 — The School of Technology at Johnson & Wales University has been a hidden gem in Downcity Providence. Now, Rhode Islanders will get a chance to see the shining talents of students and faculty when the new Alan Shawn Feinstein Technology & Design Center opens its doors for business later this summer. The Feinstein Technology & Design Center will help nonprofit organizations who can now tap into cutting-edge design, graphics, technology and marketing services with the help of the generation of users that knows it best – college students. Johnson & Wales students will work in the Center as part of their required community service learning (CSL) program. While earning CSL hours, they will apply their skills towards the needs of their clients. Through the collaboration of students and faculty, the Center will provide, at no cost to its clients, basic design services, including digital collateral designs for print media, websites, video, photography, multimedia and other creative assets. Additional services will include marketing solutions and computer-aided drafting for facilities planning. "Our technology students have been collaborating with nonprofit organizations for many years – now our window is open and Rhode Island will see the level of talent, creativity and professionalism they have to offer," Frank Tweedie, dean of the School of Technology said as he waved his hand across a vast exhibit of brochures, logos, and collateral materials his students have generated over the years. "Thanks to the generosity of Alan Shawn Feinstein, more Rhode Island businesses will be able attain their goals while Johnson & Wales students are gaining authentic and meaningful experiences." The Center will be located in one of the most happening areas of Downcity. It will be housed in the 1,500 square foot first floor “storefront” of the School of Technology located at 138 Mathewson Street, directly across from the Hotel Providence and around the corner from the burgeoning revival of the Downcity Retail District. "The opportunity presented to me to connect Rhode Island nonprofits with the technological talent that Johnson & Wales students and faculty can offer was irresistible," Alan Shawn Feinstein, philanthropist, notes. There are more than 6,000 non-profit organizations in Rhode Island. For many, they face a lack of technological and staffing resources, making it tough to stay current and be competitive. The Technology & Design Center will provide such services at no charge to qualified organizations. In addition, Tweedie points out that to get them up and running, the Center will cover initial printing costs for the first year, and will design and maintain any new website on the School’s server for one year.
