Hospitality Professionals, and Students from the North Miami Campus To Discuss Diversity at May 3 Diversity Symposium NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — April 30, 2007 — Students and professionals will engage in a dialogue about the importance of diversity in the hospitality industry at a daylong event at the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts, Thursday, May 3 from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Knight Concert Hall located at 1300 Biscayne Blvd. in downtown Miami. The event is not open to the public, but is open to the media. The event will include 150 students from the North Miami Campus, more than a dozen J&W alumni from some of the area's leading hotels and food service companies and managers and executives from Compass Group, the world's leading food service company. The theme of the event, "Transforming Minds," will carry through in each of the sessions. Topics range from "Pull Your Pants Up" (etiquette for men) and "No She Didn't" (etiquette for women) to "The Show Must Go On," which will tackle the importance of cultural sensitivity when planning and executing events. Diversity scholar and consultant Deryl Hunt, whose diversity models have been used in education, business, hospitality management, law, government and health care, will deliver the keynote address based on his research in building inclusive communities. Entertainment will include dancers and musicians, who will perform during an internationally themed luncheon. "The goal of the symposium is for students to gain a different perspective on their roles as tomorrow's hospitality leaders and see diversity in an innovative way," said Larry Rice, dean of academic affairs at the North Miami Campus. "From everyday tasks to major management decisions, working with culturally different people plays a critical role for professionals working in hotels, restaurants, attractions and other areas of the hospitality industry.
