Providence Campus to Hold PROVIDENCE, RI — March 13, 2007 — Educators throughout New England are invited to attend the 10th Annual Johnson & Wales University Cassola Conference on Teaching Communication. The conference is sponsored by the English Department in the John Hazen White School of Arts & Sciences. This year's conference focuses on Controversy and Communication and will be held at the Harborside Academic Center on Friday, April 13. Registration must be received by March 30 and includes continental breakfast and a hot lunch. To attend the conference, the fee is $50 for full-time faculty/employees, $40 for adjunct faculty/employees, and $30 for students and retirees. This year's keynote speaker is Cherry Arnold, a native Rhode Islander and director/producer of BUDDY, the award-winning feature documentary about the rise and fall of Providence's notorious mayor, Vincent "Buddy" Cianci. Featuring on-camera interviews with politicians, journalists, and political pundits, Arnold's documentary was produced after Mayor Cianci was indicted in April 2001 and sent to federal prison on criminal charges of racketeering, conspiracy, extortion, witness tampering and mail fraud. Faculty and graduate students from various colleges and universities around New England including Fitchburg State, CCRI, New Hampshire Technical Institute, Landmark College, UMass Amherst, and others, as well as faculty from Johnson & Wales will present and lead the workshops. The workshops will cover a variety of topics such as: Dodging Bullet Points: Effective PowerPoint Presentations; Controversies of Civic Participation; Interpersonal Controversies: Coaching Students to Resolve Conflict; Negotiating Controversial Ideas in a Composition Class; How to be Clear When the Message is Fear; Campus Speech Codes: Creating Civility or Censorship? and Controversies in Pedagogy; as well as others. The conference is named after the late Ilene Cassola, a professor at the University and a founding member of the conference.
