North Miami Dean Wins Up & Comers Award

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – June 29, 2007 – Larry Rice Ed.D., dean of academic affairs at the North Miami Campus, was honored at the South Florida Business Journal 2007 Up & Comers Awards as the winner in the professional services category.

Rice oversees all faculty and academic administration for the College of Business, the School of Arts & Sciences and The Hospitality College and is the founder of the Teaching and Learning Society at JWU. The society is made up of a committee of faculty that researches best practices in teaching in order to stimulate better learning among students at Johnson & Wales University and students in the academic community in general.

Rice holds an associate degree in culinary arts from Johnson & Wales University; a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management and a master’s degree in food service and hotel management from Florida International University. He received his doctorate in higher education from Nova Southeastern University in 1998. 

In addition to his job commitments, Rice has also served as a consultant for various organizations in South Florida, including the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and ICB Productions. In August 2002, Rice partnered to form LaMist Inc., a management consulting company. He has also served as chairman of the board of directors for the Visitor Industry Council of Greater Miami and as a board member of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau. He is currently a member of the board for the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts.

Rice still finds time to help the community by volunteering for the Unity House foundation, the Poverty Alleviation Community Empowerment Program and Susie Daniels Charter Elementary School.

The Up & Comers Awards, sponsored by the South Florida Business Journal, honors South Florida executives under the age of 40 who have found success early in life. Winners in each category were chosen based on the criteria of their educational background, involvement in the community and demonstration of a successful and growing career. The ceremony was held June 14, 2007, at the International Fishing Hall of Fame in Dania, Fla.
