Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) and Theme Floors, are an exciting approach to combining residential and academic life at Johnson & Wales University, Denver. LLCs and theme floors provide students with an opportunity to interact with faculty, staff, and other students around a theme or academic discipline in an active and collaborative program that enhances the teaching and learning process by incorporating all aspects of a student’s collegiate experience. Research on living-learning communities has indicated that students who live in LLCs earn higher grades, are more satisfied with their collegiate experience, have greater interaction with faculty, and engage more often in academic related conversations with peers. Interested students who choose to participate will live on the same floor with other students who share an interest in their honors course work, Wellness, Outdoor Adventures or Culinary Arts.
Honors Community
Residents who are honors students have the opportunity to interact with their
professors outside of class, participate in co-curricular academic opportunities,
engage in honors projects, and gain valuable academic success skills. For
more information about eligibility requirements of the Honors Community,
please contact the Student Affairs office at 303.256.9400 or the School of
Arts and Sciences at 303.256.9554.
Wellness
The Wellness floor is designed for on-campus students who wish to focus on
their overall physical, mental, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual wellness
as a person. The community is designed for those wanting to live in a substance-free
environment (no tobacco, alcohol, or illegal substances on and off the floor).
Students voluntarily sign a contract that they will not engage in these substances
before they can live on this floor. Students will have the opportunity to participate
in ongoing programs presented by staff, faculty, and floor residents on topics
such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle and creating balance.
Outdoor Adventures
The Outdoor Adventures floor is designed for residential students who wish
to focus their co-curricular time on a love of outdoor adventure and wilderness
based pursuits. This community is designed for those who desire to be active
in wilderness based activities such as biking, rock climbing, hiking and
skiing, or those that just want to learn more about what the beautiful Colorado
Rockies offer. Students will have the opportunity to engage in programs such
as avalanche survival, ski waxing, and rock climbing techniques. Programming
opportunities are abundant and will be determined by the floor’s interests.
Culinary Arts
This floor community is designed for culinary arts majors wishing to enhance
their collegiate experience through programs focused on the field of Culinary
Arts. Residents have the opportunity to participate in programs such as academic
success skills for culinary students and networking within the discipline.
Additionally, floor inspired field trips allow students to gain valuable
insight while providing students exposure to trends in the industry and local
expert interaction.
