Denver, Colorado is a vibrant, growing city with over 200 parks
and dozens of tree-lined boulevards. The city's architecture reflects
its three boom periods: Victorian, when silver was discovered, Turn-of-the-Century,
when gold was discovered, and Modern, when the energy boom of the
1980's added 16 skyscrapers to the downtown skyline.
Although
considered western in character, Denver is actually located on a
high, rolling plain in the center of the country. With the exception
of Kansas City, Denver is closer to the exact center of the continental
United States than any other metropolitan area.
Denver is truly the "Mile High City". The 15th step of the State
Capitol is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level. However, just west
of the city are the "foothills", a gentle series of peaks ranging
from 7,000 to 11,000 feet high. Slightly behind that is the Continental
Divide, a series of peaks soaring to 14,000 feet.
sports Denver is also a sports and recreation Mecca! The
city offers 450 miles of designated bike paths. There are over 70
golf courses in the area. Within an hour's drive there are boundless
opportunities for skiing, river running, hiking, fishing, camping,
horseback riding, and mountain biking. In addition, Denver has a
full compliment of professional sports, including the Nuggets, Avalanche,
and world champion Broncos.
weather
Denver has a mild, dry and arid climate averaging 300 days of sunshine
annually. Winters are mild with an average daily high of 45°F.
Snow does fall, but because of Denver's altitude and the dry climate,
it usually melts in a very short period of time. Due to Denver's
dry relative humidity, summer and fall are delightful, with average
temperatures in the 80's.
what else is there to do? Denver also has a central downtown
area. Here, within easy walking distance are 5,000 hotel rooms,
the cities convention complex, performing arts center, and many
shops, department stores, restaurants and night spots. Museums and
historic sites are also conveniently located to the downtown area.
The Johnson & Wales University campus is approximately 10 minutes
from downtown. Denver has the largest park system in the nation,
with 205 parks within city limits and 20,000 acres of parks in the
nearby mountains.
