The Center for Equine Studies Providence Campus
Have you always dreamed of turning your love of horses into a successful
career? For over 20 years, the equine program has been giving students
the practical education they need, along with the hands-on experience
of working and learning on a University-owned horse farm as part of their
training.
Our equine programs in Equine Studies, Equine Business Management and
Equine Business Management/Riding allows students to choose the career
path they're most comfortable with. Maybe you're interested in management
and running a successful horse farm or stable? Perhaps you'd rather spend
your workday riding and grooming horses. As an equine major at J&W,
you'll have the tools you need to succeed in a variety of equine careers.
In addition to taking necessary academic courses in such topics as physiology
and genetics, nutrition, diseases, anatomy, lameness, evaluation and selection,
you'll also have the opportunity to earn class credit at our equine center.
You will have your riding stands certified upon graduation. Students can
also participate on our intercollegiate combined training team.
Distinctive features of the program include opportunities for students
to study in England for a term during their senior year and an active
cooperative education program. Some co-ops offered to our students have
taken place at Fox Ledge Farm, a dressage training facility in East Haddam,
CT, Stadium Jumping, Inc., a horse management firm, Tara Stables, a thoroughbred
training stable in Ocala, Fla.; Bascule Farm in Pooleville, Md.; American
Equine Insurance Group in Rolling Meadows, Ill.; and Classic Communication,
an equine public relations firm in Mass.
the facility Located a short drive from the Providence campus
in Rehoboth, Mass.; The Equine Center is adjacent to the Rehoboth State
Forest. The farm includes a 170' x 70' mirrored indoor riding hall with
leather based footing, attached 32-stall barn, pastures and turnout paddocks.
Rounding out the facility are three show quality outdoor arenas: a 225'
x 100' multi-purpose jumping ring, a 220' x 80' dressage ring and a 70'
x 135' warming-up ring.
Additional features include pine-paneled observation room housing state-of-the-art
communication technologies that allow clinicians to address students and
spectators during mounted lessons. Classroom, offices and a conference
area with kitchen facilities make this a comfortable meeting area. Heated
tack rooms, laundry facilities, wash stalls, locker rooms and storage
add to the additional ease and efficiency of the facility.
the horses All school horses are selected for their training and
temperament. Several different breeds are represented, including thoroughbred,
quarter horse, dutch warm blood, swedish warm blood, hanoverian, selle
francais, danish warm blood and holsteiner. Many of the horses have successful
show records, which may include competition experience at the F.E.I. level
of dressage, preliminary jumper and regional hunter shows.
extracurricular activities Student dressage shows, school shows,
seminars and clinics are available for students. J&W participates
in equine sports through two distinct competitive teams and is an active
member of the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association with students competing
on the hunt-seat equitation team throughout New England. The University
also hosts two combined tests at the center yearly. A newly developed
team that broadens the students' competitive experience is the Interscholastic
Dressage Team.
Students have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge through selected
field trips, the highlight of which is the annual upstate New York breeding
farm trip. We also have an equine clubs that provides students with social
and recreational equine opportunities.
