2008 Feinstein ‘Enriching America’ Awards The Feinstein ‘Enriching America’ individual award goes to Eric Sharer, President of the Johnson & Wales Nutrition Society. Throughout the past year, Eric has utilized his passion for food and his knowledge of nutrition to educate and improve the lives of people in our community. He implemented several nutrition programs including a program for the Girl Scouts of America called “Mom’s Not Here,” which is a program to help teach college-bound Girl Scouts basic life skills to help when they move away from home. Eric also planned a campus Nutrition Week, which included a presentation open to the public called “Healthy Living with Chronic Kidney Disease” created for the National Kidney Foundation. Eric also planned many other service events for the Nutrition Society and worked with the “Captain Nutrition” program for the past two years. Eric is a graduating senior and he plans on continuing his community work through further education and becoming a registered dietician. Sigma Alpha Mu received the group Feinstein ‘Enriching America’ Award this year. The club has done almost 1500 hours of service this year and has given itself a goal of 2500 for next year. This fraternity was out in the community almost every weekend and sometimes at two events in one week. Some of the work that they’ve done includes: an Alzheimer’s Charity Walk, a walk for Multiple Sclerosis, participation in Relay for Life, ushering for the ballet at the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium, helping with the Alzheimer’s Silent Auction, helping with the Providence Preservation Society tours and fundraising events, and fundraising for Make-A-Wish Foundation. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses. The Honor Roll is jointly sponsored by the Corporation, through its Learn and Serve America program, and the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.
