english language proficiency Johnson & Wales University's English as a Second Language program allows students to focus on the areas where they need the most improvement, while also allowing them to take regular classes in an undergraduate degree program. This flexibility provides students with the most efficient transition into college. Applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Students who submit proof of English proficiency may go directly into regular academic course work.

Minimum TOEFL requirements (all levels, undergraduate and graduate):

TOEFL socre of 80 (Internet-based or IBT)
TOEFL score of 550 (pen/paper or PPT)
TOEFL score of 210 (computerized or CBT)

Individual section scores must also meet minimum score requirements. Johnson & Wales University also reserves the right to require ESL classes to increase proficiency in a particular area, regardless of total TOEFL or other test scores.

Acceptable proof of English proficiency may also include one of the following comparable English proficiency examinations:

IELTS (Cambridge), Band 6.5

City & Guilds Pitman ESOL Examinations - Higher Intermediate or Expert Level

ELS Level 112 Certificate of Completion and Academic Report

The London Tests of English LTE, Level 4 (Advanced)

MELAB (Michigan English Language Battery) - 77

S.T.E.P. Eiken - (Society for Testing English Proficiency) - Grade 1

Other English examination results will also be reviewed, and experience studying in the English language will be taken into consideration. Please refer to the University catalog for additional TOEFL requirements.

Note: Enrolled students may search for up-to-date course information via uconnect. A PDF version of the entire catalog is available by campus and year of entry on the Student Academic Services website.

Special projects such as English Immersion, English for Specific Purposes, Workplace and/or Business English can be designed and conducted by members of the ESL faculty.

Three eleven week English language programs are offered during the academic year (September - May) as well as an eight week summer program.
